Frequently asked questions - July - August
The information on sealing of devices is very unclear. When and where is this to be done? It needs to be before the planning period?
The devices shall be sealed before entering the starting area. There is information on sealing the devices in the distributed competition material envelope.
I am confused about the Model Event. Bulletin 4 says that it open from the Tuesday but Bulletin 5 infers that the Model Event will not open until 12:30 on the Friday. I assume I am reading this wrong because it would mean that both the model area will be very congested on the Friday afternoon and attendees at the IRF meeting are effectively prohibited from participating in the Model Event
The training area with controls which is covered by the training map is what is here referred as Model Event. The Model Event did open on 30.6.2015 as stated in Bulletins 2, 3 and 4. Model event is open and free to move until the race start as stated in Bulletin 3. The embargo (from 19 August 2015) does not include the training map area. Moving within training map's limits is not restricted and is open until the race starts as stated in Bulletin 5.
Why does Registration not open until 12:00 on the Friday? It seems that you are making the process very busy for no reason and making it difficult for people wanting to attend the IRF meeting to register ahead of the meeting?
We believe there is enough time to register before and after the IRF meeting and those who are not attending the meeting can register during the meeting.
Is it required to have all team members present at registration. This is very difficult for some who are not traveling with team mate.
We must check the identity of the competitors and check the age in age restricted categories. Thus we will require all competitors to display a photo id. Competitors do no need to present their ID simultaneously but the last member of team to display ID will get the material.
Map is PAPER, what that mean?
Map is print on normal offset paper, by using traditional 6 colour offsetprinting (no digital). Paper is not any kind of waterproof material. But you will get a plastic cover for your map. We did test with weatherproof material and to our surprise it did not survive 24 hour race with freezing temperatures adequately.
We are arriving with car. How we do our shopping?
There is a grocery store at Saariselkä. Other shopping possibility is at Ivalo, 50km away. Nearest bigger city with pretty much all shops and stores is Rovaniemi where you can find almost everything. On the way is also Sodankylä and especially store Sokos - Sodankylä where you can do your shopping.
I am looking for orienteering maps to buy (1/7500, 1/10000 or 1/15000) in order to make some trainings.
You can contact local orienteering club, Lapin Sudet , Ms Tarja Tuovinen, thtuovinen at gmail.com

What are the cabins and lean-tos in the competition area?
In the competition area there are maybe 10-15 shelters. Some of those are cabins (no mattresses and blankets) and some of those are a lean-to.

How about using Credit Cards?
In Finland pretty much everywhere credit cards are accepted. Only in some tiny souvenir shop or ice cream shop you might find a sign "vain käteinen" - only cash. There is a bankomat (ATM) at Saariselkä and nearest bank is in Ivalo. It is good idea to have some cash along.
Where do I find old orienteering maps of the area?
There are old orienteering maps, ask club Lapin Sudet. For rogaining purposes you are better off browsing Pikakartta: http://pikakartta.fi/ and Kansalaisen Karttapaikka: http://kansalaisen.karttapaikka.fi/kartanhaku/osoitehaku.html?e=519411&n=7581820&scale=40000&tool=siirra&width=600&height=600&lang=en as the map is based on the same base material as those.
