Testing the physical properties of map paper and print quality. In the photo the map has been immersed in warm water for 35 hours. Adding still some more warm water in the soup.
Rogainers can now sign up for WRC2015 in the pre-qualification phase. The race will be held in Finnish Lapland in the Saariselkä area in Finland on 22.-23.8.2015. Competitors are served tremendous nature of Finland and a great experience.
Entry criteria for 13WRC2015 is now published. See criteria and prepare yourself for the race.
There is still one month to wait for the registration to open. In the first phase during the first 6 weeks the registration will be confirmed for pre-qualified entrants and others need to wait until 15th of January. The WRC competition area has now got the first snow for the winter. In this article I will try to share some general information for all competitors. It may be clear for the locals but can be some kind of news for the first-timers. My intention is to give even opportunities and eliminate luck and “home advantage” as far as it is practical. The IRF Advisor Jonathan Sutcliff did visit the area just before the Mother Nature decided to close the area. It seems Jonathan was happy with his experience. See attached file..
WRC2015 event center will be held in Kiilopää. On picture our course setter Juhani Isaksson (right) and Fell Centre Kiilopää manager Seppo Uski. More information Fell Centre Kiilopää: http://www.suomenlatu.fi/kiilopaa/en/ Exactly one year left and WRC 2015 will be held in Kiilopää and Saariselkä area in Finland. Be there and enjoy the amazing landscapes and silent forests of Lapland!
The organisers are very satisfied with the current situation regarding the arrangements. -Everything is going well and we are already waiting for next August to enjoy the great weekend with all the rogaining lovers, says Event Manager Jari Kaaja. The course setter Juhani Isaksson has made good plans for a variable rogaining course. -The controls will be set in varying terrain types from high fjells to large open swamps and old pine forests. Those who want to fight for the victory have to make really good plans for their competition day and night, promises Isaksson. Kaaja and Isaksson along with their friends in Retki-Rogaining have organized 24-hour rogaining competitions in Finland every year since 2007. They have had a significant role in importing rogaining to Finland. -The number of participants has increased every year and we wish this competition gets the interest of new rogaining people. It has been very few participants from Sweden and Norway in previous WRCs and we are trying to intrigue interest in our neighbouring countries, too, tells Jari Kaaja. If you have visited Lapland during the summer time, you may have been suffering of the irritating (but not dangerous) mosquitos. No worry! In August they are usually gone, dead after first cold nights. Instead you may meet some friendly animals in the fjells: there are a lot of reindeers hiking around Saariselkä area. Today the weather in Saariselkä is cloudy and the temperature is +8 C. That's a little bit colder than usually this time of year, normal day temperature being about +15–18 C. But the weather in Lapland may change quickly, and especially in the open fjell areas you have to be ready for the rapid changes. Outi Ojanen World Rogaining Championships 2015 were awarded to Finland. There is less than two years of effective time to organize this event.
Previous major rogaining event in Finland was European Championships in 2009. Those were held in area around Ylläs. The International Rogaining Federation has awarded the rights to host the 13th World Rogaining Championships to Kalke Ry of Finland. The Championships are planned for August 22-23, 2015 and will attract many hundred elite endurance cross-country navigators from around the world. The event centre in Saariselkä region will host the first ever World Rogaining Championships to be held above the Arctic Circle. The competition area in the Urho Kekkonen National Park with its navigationally difficult wetlands and challenging hills covered by open tundra are sure to be a thorough test of the world’s best rogaining teams.
IRF President, Richard Robinson, said that this will be the first time that Finland has hosted the World Rogaining Championships and their success in securing this event was testament to the strength of the development of the sport there. Rogaining started in Finland in 2007 with the first 24-hour race held in Jämi followed by the second one in Seitseminen in 2008. In 2009 Finnish rogainers and Kalke Ry, under the leadership of Jari Kaaja successfully organized the 6th European Rogaining Championships near Ylläs, north of the Arctic Circle. IRF WRC Manager Jan Tojnar, who leads the selection process for World Rogaining Championships, said that the award to Finland is recognition of appreciable role of Finnish rogainers in the field of international rogaining, and their involvement at previous international rogaines. Rogaining athletes from Finland belong to keen participants of major rogaining events around the world. Finland’s Iiro Kakko, who will be a key member of the organising team in 2015, teamed with the late Nigel Aylott of Australia to win the 3rd World Rogaining Championships in Canada in 1998. |
